The Top 10 Deadline Day Transfers.

Football transfers are unarguably hotly talked about events. Every year, the transfer market gives fans a tonne of excitement, anticipation, and surprises. The deadline day in any transfer window undoubtedly provides the most excitement. Over the years, some brilliant and some not so brilliant deals were penned down on deadline day, and some had long-lasting implications on a club's legacy. Here, we try to rank the greatest deadline day signings and the impacts that the had on the clubs which pulled them off.






1. Sergio Ramos: Sevilla => Real Madrid (2005)


Possibly the most spectacular deadline day signing of all time, Sergio Ramos moved to Los Blancos from Sevilla in 2005. Ramos has cemented his stature as a Real Madrid legend, and his trophy cabinet is a testimony to that. Ramos has won 5 La Liga Santander titles, 2 Copa Del Rey trophies, 4 Champions Leagues, 4 Club World Cups, 3 UEFA Super Cups, and 4 Supercopa de Espana titles.


2. Wayne Rooney: Everton => Manchester United (2004)


A 16-year Wayne Rooney kicked off his Premier League career with Everton in 2002, before moving to United in 2004. He scored 17 goals in all competitions for Everton in 77 appearances, before signing for the Red Devils in 2004. He would go on to score 253 goals across all competitions in the 559 games he played for United. Wazza also broke multiple Premier League, Manchester United, and English football records during his glorious career with the Manchester club. He won 12 major titles with United, which included 5 Premier League titles, 3 League Cups, the FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, and a Club World Cup.


3. Gareth Bale: Tottenham Hotspur => Real Madrid (2013)


His last couple of years at the Madrid club may not have been the smoothest, but Gareth Bale nevertheless had an illustrious career with the Los Blancos. He scored 105 goals for Real Madrid in 251 games and gave us some unforgettable moments. From his superhuman run outpacing Marc Bartra in the Copa del Ray final against Barcelona, to the magnificent overhead kick against Liverpool in the Champions League final, Bale always put up a show on the biggest of stages. In the 7 years in the Spanish capital, Bale won everything possible accumulating a staggering 16 trophies: 4 Champions League titles, 2 La Liga crowns, a Copa del Rey, 2 Spanish Super Cups, 3 European Super Cup, and 4 Club World Cups.


4. Luis Suarez: AFC Ajax => Liverpool (2012)


“Suarez! It’s outrageous!”

“You just can’t stop him!”

During his time at Liverpool, these comments were ubiquitous when it came to watching Luis Suarez play. Fernando Torres’ departure to Chelsea led Liverpool to pull off a deadline day move that would prove to be momentous. The Reds brought Luis Suarez and Andy Carrol to Anfield, and Suarez would go on to have a magnificent career during his time at Liverpool, scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances. The 2013/14 season has been argued to be one of the greatest seasons that any player could have in the Premier League. As well as 31 goals, Suarez also provided an additional 17 assists in the Premier League that season. He sealed various individual accolades in the process, including the PFA Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, and Premier League Golden Boot awards.



5. Ashley Cole: Arsenal FC => Chelsea (2004)


Ashley Cole signed for Chelsea for 5 million Euros in 2004, and what he achieved with the club made the amount look like an absolute bargain. He added 9 trophies to his resume during his time with the Blues, which included the Premier League in the 2009–10 season, four FA Cups, one Football League Cup, and one UEFA Champions League.



6. Claude Makélélé: Real Madrid => Chelsea (2003)


Makélélé joined Chelsea from Los Blancos in 2003 and went on to make 217 appearances for the Blues. The rugged and brawny midfielder was a key figure in Chelsea's back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. He also won an FA Cup and 2 League Cups with the Blues. He was also a part of the Chelsea team that finished as runner-up to Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final.



7. Ronaldo Nazario: Inter Milan => Real Madrid (2002)


One of the most prolific marksmen of our generation joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan in 2002 and became a part of one of the most star-studded teams ever assembled in club football history. He netted 104 goals in 177 games as a Real Madrid player. He lifted the La Liga title with Real Madrid in his first season and also won the Spanish Super Cup that year. He also won the Ballon d'Or in 2002. Despite being plagued by injuries, Ronaldo Nazario remains to be one of the greatest to ever grace the game, and definitely one of the greatest to wear the Los Blancos shirt.



8. Carlos Tevez: Corinthians => West Ham United (2006)


Tevez joined West Ham along with fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano and kicked off what would be a successful Premier League career spanning across 3 clubs. Tevez played a crucial role in the Hammers' survival battle in his first season when his 7 goals in 10 games kept West Ham in the Premier League. With Manchester United, he won the Premier League in 2007/08 and 2008/09, the Community Shield in 2008, the League Cup in 2009, the Champions League in 2007/08, and the Club World Cup in 2008. He would later join Manchester City, where he won the FA Cup in 2010/11, the Premier League, and the Community Shield in 2011/12.



9. Sadio Mane: Salzburg => Southampton FC (2014)


Mane kicked off his Premier League career with a deadline day transfer in 2014 to the Saints. His quality was evident, and with 25 goals in 75 games for the Saints, he made Liverpool notice his quality, who signed him in 2016 for 34 million Euros.



10. Hugo Lloris: Lyon => Tottenham Hotspur (2012)


Spurs beat Liverpool to the purchase of Clint Dempsey and signed Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on the deadline day of the 2012 transfer window. Lloris has been with the club ever since, and the World Cup winner has been a pivotal piece in Spurs' silverware aspirations through the years.
